First built in 1893, the Waldorf-Astoria was the city’s largest hotel (and the birthplace of the Waldorf salad), but it was demolished to make way for the Empire State Building. The current Art Deco Waldorf opened in 1931 and now has protected status as a historic hotel. In addition to history, it has spent $2 million to make 24 rooms into 12 reconfigured “Astor Suites.” It still caters to the high and mighty (guests have included Princess Grace, Sophia Loren and a long list of U.S. Presidents). Double-check your attire before entering the hotel—you won’t be allowed in if you’re wearing a baseball cap, T-shirt or even trendy ripped jeans. Rooms: 1,215. Bar. Business center. Gym. High-speed wireless Internet (free). Restaurants (4). Spa.
