In ways both immediate and far-reaching, New York City has taken the lead in the urban environmental movement. Initiatives like PlaNYC—Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal for a greener, greater New York City—are not only paving the way toward a sustainable future, but they’re also encouraging residents and visitors to join the effort by taking small steps to achieve big strides. New Yorkers are changing light bulbs to CFLs, buying energy star products and recycling. But there is so much more we can be doing. From the places we shop and eat to the methods of transportation we use to get there, the five boroughs offer plenty of opportunities to do something good for the environment by supporting local businesses that offer eco-friendly products and services.
Greenopia—the urban dweller’s guide to green living—is one group dedicated to highlighting and supporting green businesses. On Earth Day, they’ll be launching their first NYC directory filled with thousands of eco-friendly retailers, services and organizations. Each listing has been researched and carefully screened to ensure it meets sustainability standards to help you make easy, informed choices. Visit greenopia.com for more information about their unique Green Leaf Awards system and criteria. From restaurants and greenmarkets to hotels, shops and day spas, it’s easy to go green in NYC. See below for a list of eco-friendly destinations throughout the City.
